چکیده

In the cosmological blast-wave model for gamma ray bursts (GRBs), high energy ( > ∼10 GeV) γ rays are produced either through Compton scattering of soft photons by ultrarelativistic electrons, or as a consequence of the acceleration of protons to ultrahigh energies. We describe the spectral and temporal characteristics of high energy γ rays produced by both mechanisms, and discuss how these processes can be distinguished through observations with low-threshold Čerenkov telescopes or GLAST. We propose that Compton scattering of starlight photons by blast wave electrons can produce delayed flares of GeV – TeV radiation.

“No High Energy Emission” GRB Class Is Attributable to Brightness Bias

The inhomogeneous brightness distribution of BATSE detected gamma-ray bursts has been considered strong evidence for their cosmological origin. However, subclasses of gamma-ray bursts have been shown to have significantly more homogeneous brightness distributions. Pendleton et al. (1997) have found such a result for gamma-ray bursts with no detectable emission at energies >300 keV. Accordingly,...

A Search for Prompt Very High Energy Emission from Satellite-detected Gamma- ray Bursts using Milagro

Gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) have been detected up to GeV energies and are predicted by many models to emit in the very high energy (VHE, > 100 GeV) regime too. Detection of such emission would allow us to constrain GRB models. Since its launch, in late 2004, the Swift satellite has been locating GRBs at a rate of approximately 100 per year. The rapid localization and follow-up in many wavelengths h...

5 Gamma Ray Bursts as cosmological tools

The use of Gamma Ray Bursts as “standard candles” has been made possible by the recent discovery of a very tight correlation between their rest frame intrinsic properties. This correlation relates the GRB prompt emission peak spectral energy Epeak to the energy Eγ corrected for the collimation angle θjet of these sources. The possibility to use GRBs to constrain the cosmological parameters and ...

BATSE Observations of Gamma-Ray Burst Tails

With the discovery of low-energy radiation appearing to come from the site of gamma-ray bursts in the hours to weeks after the initial burst of gamma rays, it would appear that astronomers have seen a cosmological imprint made by the burster on its surroundings. I discuss in this paper the phenomenon of post-burst emission in BATSE gamma-ray bursts at energies traditionally associated with prom...
